Urban Hacks is a Hackathon bringing together over 150 students from across the GTA to use Hamilton open source city data to prototype and design solutions to major urban challenges.
What is a Hackathon?
A hackathon is best described as an “invention marathon”. Anyone who has an interest in technology attends a hackathon to learn, build & share their creations over the course of a weekend in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
How much does it cost?
Nothing :). We will provide you with a weekend worth of swag, meals, snacks and drinks, free of charge.
What if I do not know how to code?
Not a problem! It’s entirely irrelevant what your experience is going into a hackathon, it’s more about your interest in technology. If you’re wanting to learn how to code outside of a hackathon, try places such as Codeacademy, Sololearn or Scotch.io tutorials.
How big can teams be?
Teams can have up to 4 people. You can solo if you desire to, but we have found that hackathons are more fun in a team.
Is transportation covered?
Unfortunately this year, we are unable to provide busses or travel reimbursement for our hackers. However, we encourage all our attendees to use public transportation!
Who can attend
Any High School and University student is eligible to attend.
Where do I register?
Registration will open mid-October!
Do you have a code of conduct?
Yes, since we are an MLH member event we will be following the MLH Code of Coduct here
What should I bring?
You’ll need: A laptop and charger. Everything else is optional. However, we strongly encourage you to bring a sleeping bag, pillows, toiletries, and a couple of changes of clothes. You won’t need: An idea, or a team. You can create your own team during the hackathon, and generate some amazing creations along the way. You also don’t need to worry about food, we’ve got you covered. Please do not bring: Firearms or other weapons, alcohol, illegal drugs, animals (no matter how adorable).
